Chapter 34
â¦â¦â¦
SHAD YAWNED AGAIN AS he and Lawr made their way slowly through the dark and dense forest. They would still arrive at the doorway too early, but it was better than staying in town and running into Harailt. Dain had received a surprise call early that morning and immediately packed to leave, though Shad had no idea what for. The dark man could be cryptic when he wanted to and Shad didnât ask. Heâd left before the sun was up and Shad and Lawr had to leave the inn too.
The quick breakfast outside hadnât even been warm and now the long walk through the damp forest was making Shad miserable. He yawned again, trying to wake himself. It hadnât worked the first dozen times and it didnât work this time either. Shad still wanted to curl up and sleep more.
Lawrâs usual stoic self was ready to not talk. Shad frowned at the back of the older manâs head. Heâd come to like the older fellowâmore than just being able to tolerate his presence like he did with most people. Shad enjoyed the manâs quiet company. That, and he was one of so few people who didnât hold Shadâs Shade side against him.
Still. Shad frowned, there were times when heâd been in the manâs head and sensed some hopelessness. Some fear and panic, though over what, Shad couldnât understand. He doesnât like being alone. The realization was strange. That canât be right. Lawr always wants to be left alone. Shad frowned again at the thought. It still didnât make sense.
âYou keep thinking about me and staring. Youâre gonna burn holes in my head,â Lawr said, glancing back briefly at Shad.
Shad flashed a smile as he jumped out of his mental pondering and stepped quickly to catch back up to the man. âI donât think I could possibly stare that hard, though you could glare holes through granite. Howâd you know I was thinkinâ âbout you?â Shad wondered out loud. He hoped Lawr was in enough of a mood for a conversation now that the little bit of talking had woken him up. Maybe he could coax Lawr into answering some of his questions.
Lawr gave a little scoff and looked around at Shad with narrowed eyes. He paused a moment before deciding to speak. âYou were focusing hard. I can feel you in my head sometimes, when you do that.â
Shadâs stomach dropped to his feet. âOh.â He tried to sound his normal state of amused, though he wanted to puke. No one had ever said anything about him getting in their heads. Bry never had, but Bry usually avoided the topic for his sake, unless something was a major problem.
Maybe this isnât a big deal, Shad reasoned to himself. Maybe itâs just Lawr. . .or something... That trail of thought didnât make him feel any better. He liked Lawr. He was a good friend. What if he hurt Lawr at some point? Or accidentally manipulated him? The thought terrified him as he glanced back at the man.
